With carefully composed images showing found situations, Brussels based photographer, Sven Laurent is exploring the perception of materiality, value and legitimacy in contemporary art. Constantly oscillating between abstraction and representation, Sven’s work is inviting the viewer to question his own sense of aesthetics and the way he is looking at his environment. Taken during daily walks part of a long physical rehabilitation process, these images are referring to the notion of ‘abstract landscape', translating painterly concerns like surface, texture, and composition into intimate fragments of the urban environment.

Taken from opposite viewpoints, two images of the same space, without prior intention, form a third one that exists only in the viewer’s perception. The work considers landscape not as a fixed reality, but as a constructed field shaped by framing, memory, and the mind’s impulse to complete what is missing. In this space between images, the viewer is invited to inhabit a shifting terrain where observation becomes interpretation, and absence becomes form. With this work, Sven Laurent reflects on landscape as a mediated and unstable construction, in which the brain bridges visual gaps through memory, recognition, and projection.
